If you going to Motorboat Sail Kayak or Paddleboard the weather and seas conditions are very important
We know the weather plays a very important role when on the water and we always treat it with the utmost respect it deserves.
To help our planning for a day on the water we use a combination AccuWeather (the Russell land based hourly forecasting), the regularly updated Met Service Bay of Islands Recreational marine forecast and the tides for the Russell area.
Tides play an important part when considering a beach landing in the Bay of Islands. The distance between low and high tide can be as much as 20 metres.
Help or assistance for anything on the water around Russell is a call on the VHF Channel 63 (9am to 7pm) to Russell Radio. These guys update weather forecast every few hours and their friendly service and many years experience is just a call away.
Please always use your common sense when on the water. If the weather or sea conditions change then slow down, change course to suit or seek shelter.
Some of the wide range of Russell businesses provide other water based activities and a great range of food. Before your morning or afternoon fishing charter grab a coffee, hot chocolate or an early lunch or dinner from one of the cafes.
There’s food for all budgets and tastes with a lot of it freshly cooked. For lunch or dinner, whether it’s dine-in or takeaway, you can choose from a wide range in price and variety. Some of our food places include The Duke of Marlborough, The Gables, Tuk Tuk Thai , Spice Route – Indian and Thai or Hone’s pizzas. Outside the town about 8km away (toward the car ferry) is the Omata Estate (they have a shuttle van) and it’s food with amazing views. A little further away (15 minute drive) down the road toward Rawhiti is Sages @ Paroa Bay as part of the Paroa Bay winery. Ask about their meet and collect service from your boat on Paroa Bay beach
Russell isn’t just about food and the water! We have an ever increasing and changing variety of clothing, art and souvenirs shops.
