Our self drive hire motorboat Awamoa allows 4 adults (+ 6 month infant) to go out on the water in the New Zealand’s beautiful Bay of Islands. It is available for a 1/2 day hire of 4 hours, a full day hire of 8 hours or longer. Powered by a late model Yamaha 70HP 2 stoke outboard you’ll be at a close by island in no time.
You’re the skipper of this self-drive motorboat so take your family or friends sightseeing to an island and stop for a picnic. Go for a swim, try your luck catching fish for supper or snorkelling. With our knowledge of the Bay of Islands near Russell please ask how we can help make you holiday adventure on the water totally awesome.
During the summer months the water is warm and the temperatures range from 21ºC to 28ºC (70ºF to 84ºF) so bring your snorkelling and fishing gear or hire from us. Swimming and snorkelling are great things to do from your motorboat. Perhaps even more fun is trying to catch the plentiful snapper and kingfish for the dinner table. A great range of beautiful sandy beaches are ready for you so bring your friends, family and beach and picnic things.
Dolphins are plentiful in the Bay of Islands from mid-October each year through until March/early April. When you see these magical sea animals please always slow down or stop and enjoy your time with.
With care you can beach (allow for the tide drop – typically 10 to 25 metres between high and low tides) or anchor and spend time ashore on one or two our beautiful islands during your day out.
Please operate the boat within the sea conditions for everyones comfort and enjoyment. Take care and slow down if the sea gets choppy.
Motorboat not within your budget or idea of fun?
Our self drive motorboat hire is not for everyone or perhaps your budget so hiring a Row Boat with an outboard may be an option. It’s ideal for close in fishing or cruising to nearby Matauwhi Bay and its collection of yachts. Further down you’ll find the Orongo Bay oyster farms (take care at low tide) and the mangrove swamps. Why not load up for a picnic on Mill Island but only at low tide.
What about the weather?
We know the weather always plays a very important role when on the water. Please never under estimate the sea. If the water is too rough we won’t send you out and you’re under no obligation if the weather forces a cancellation. We put together a weather forecast with a low/high tide list. We use Accuweather for the land based Russell weather forecast and the MetService Bay of Islands Recreational forecast. Russell Radio on VHF Channel 63 provide regularly updated marine forecasts.
